Welcome back to another edition of the Culture Crave newsletter 🍿

It’s been a busy week filled with entertainment news, so let’s get into it.

Supergirl hits theaters, but critics aren’t loving it

Supergirl is officially here and it’s been riding the line of a rotten or fresh Rotten Tomatoes score since the review embargo lifted earlier this week. Wherever it lands, it likely won’t be the super hit that the DCU wants it to be.

I saw the film, and it’s far from a disaster like some may lead you to believe, for example, Variety’s review called it the ‘worst superhero script’ they can remember, but it didn’t fulfill me as much as Superman. Rocky pacing, oddly restrained action sequences, along with lackluster visuals and music made it a disappointing follow-up to what James Gunn established last year. But hey, Milly Alcock and Jason Momoa are great, so it makes me excited to see them again soon 🦸‍♀️

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is jam-packed with villains

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is nearly here and a ton of antagonists will be in it. We have yet to officially see Tombstone, which was previously confirmed by Deadline to appear, and Tom Holland says the film’s main villain remains a mystery. Expect at least one more character to be added to this list once the film releases 🕷

Timothée Chalamet’s upcoming projects

Universal Pictures announced this week that Timothée Chalamet will star alongside Selena Gomez in Not Alone, a new animated film from Illumination (Minions, Despicable Me). The film follows a romance between a rocket scientist and an astro-botanist, but their love story is quickly disrupted when a trio of tiny, unruly aliens take refuge in the home of Chalamet’s character.

It sounds like a very cute movie and if it’s a big hit, it’s not hard to imagine a world where these little aliens crossover with the Minions in the future 👽

Grand Theft Auto VI will cost $80 and the ‘physical version’ has no disc

Rockstar Games opened pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI this week and also confirmed that the game’s standard edition will cost a whooping $80 ($10 more than industry standards). Players will also be able to purchase a $100 Ultimate Edition, which includes a ton of extra in-game content.

Additionally, physical copies of the game won’t include a disc as Rockstar has substituted it for a simple digital code in the box. The optimistic theory is that Rockstar is only doing this to stop early leaks. The less optimistic theory is that the industry would love to stop making physical media and become digital-only.

Grand Theft Auto VI will release on November 19th for Xbox Series X|S and PS5 🚓

Microsoft’s upcoming film & TV slate

Earlier this week, Microsoft detailed its plans to bring more Xbox franchises to the big-screen. In addition to already announced projects like the Gears of War and Call of Duty films, Microsoft confirmed that its beloved pirate game, Sea of Thieves, is being adapted into a film with Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton attached to produce 🏴‍☠️
